Holly Henderson has release her first new music of 2020! Recorded with her band in the UK during quarantine – each member recorded their parts and sent them in for collaboration.

On the single, Holly said –

“I wrote History Repeats the week George Floyd was murdered. There was this bubbling tension rising, in the media, online, and among friends. It just seemed like the whole world was holding its breath because we all realised simultaneously after the Rodney King riots, we’re watching it happen all over again. Literally nothing had changed in nearly 30 years and people were just ready to blow.

I’d been thinking about my role in the time of a revolution – how I could be productive in my own way as a pale skinned artist. As a songwriter, I know my place is best served in commentary, storytelling and solidarity, hence History Repeats. Simplistically, it’s just about what I see, what I’m learning, what scares me, and why I still have hope. I can’t speak for anyone else, really, and I’m not trying to. But I’d like to think ‘we’re not coming very far in my lifetime after all’ is something a lot of us have thought about in the last few months and years.

Contributing to the conversation is something the whole band felt deeply about, even if we couldn’t physically protest, travel, even get in a studio together. The recording of the song very much mirrored that. I wrote the song, sent a rough demo out to everyone with some basic arrangements, and everyone wrote/recorded their own parts until it became something so much richer with our ideas combined together, and Luke’s production gave it a home and a feeling that is entirely ours.

On top of that, it was important that we payed this message and our intentions forward, so we decided on giving any money made to the AAPF #SayHerName campaign. The campaign raises awareness of the stories of Black women and girls who have endured racist police violence, and supports their families.”

All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to the AAPF #SayHerName campaign.

Holly Henderson has teamed up with audio manufacturer Focusrite on a beautiful live recording of Holly’s song “Back After Sunrise”. The track was recorded in a London loft using only a couple of microphones, her Takamine acoustic, and the 3rd Generation Scarlett 18i8 USB.

UK alternative singer and guitarist, Holly Henderson, released her debut full-length, Monday Green, on Trend & Chaos. The ten songs on the album showcase Holly’s diverse range – from lush, beautiful ballads to melt your face off alterna-pop anthems –  all featuring intricate guitar work by Henderson. Lead single “Loneliness” borrows heavily from Holly’s Britpop influences, while “We Sold The Earth” explores more experimental, prog-rock leaning sounds. The album comes to a close with “Frantic”, a track that lives in a category all to itself as it slowly builds into a combination of rich vocal melodies and striking guitars. Lyrically, Henderson releases her emotions and vulnerabilities through both self-realization and their correlation to the world around her.

Monday Green was recorded in Los Angeles with legendary producer and guitarist Pete Thorn (Chris Cornell, Courtney Love) and features contributions from drummer Blair Sinta (Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks), bassist Jon Button (The Who, Sheryl Crow), keyboardist Jebin Bruni (Liz Phair, Fiona Apple) and keyboardist Dennis Martin (Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi). On the album, Holly Henderson stated:

“The name “Monday Green” is a vaguely ironic play on words of ‘Mondegreen’, a misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing of the lyrics of a song. I knew even if I was really stark with my lyrics, or really abstract, it wouldn’t matter. People were going to have their own ideas, regardless of what my ego would want to get out of it. Every song is an extension of a thought, whether it was about the environment, my relationships or current affairs.

Musically, the album was a huge leap forward in the overall development of my sound. I went from recording demos at home through the built-in mic on my Mac, to a studio that had every toy imaginable and the chance to record with a group of people who have built their careers on crafting great songs.”
