From Holly:

“I wrote Old War New War mostly out of frustration. The lyrics were written first, I was in Italy for a while during the Brexit referendum time, and I had a lot of time to think and write, so this started as half prose, half internal monologue. I was feeling mentally worn down by the cyclical nature of British politics, I’ve always been fascinated by the behaviours and decisions we repeat, regardless of the repercussions we’ve seen from them in the past, my fears regarding that, are the core of this song.” – Holly

“This Time Next Year” – Single Out Now!

Holly Henderson has released her new single, “This Time Next Year” on Bandcamp.

“This Time Next Year” is an acoustic, baroque-pop work of art. The song feels like it could have been on a Kate Bush Holiday album in 1983. Unexpected twists and turns of harmonic movement and orchestration swirl through the song like wispy snowflakes.” – Trend & Chaos

From Holly:

“I wanted to write a Christmas song for some time, this just wasn’t the year for it. I ended up noodling on my guitar, feeling particularly down about the coming festive season, which I think has some sadness about it for a lot of people anyway. It felt apropos of the current locked down, isolating time, to write a simple folk song on my guitar. I didn’t even want to sing, just something simple and nostalgic. As I wrote I felt better. I added horns and bells, it grew into something more hopeful, without it being cringey and I got some of my Christmas spirit back.

I sang over it a few times, and improvised the lyrics over 10 or so takes until I tightened up some loose words. I just sang about my loneliness, my hope for Christmas being a rare, happy moment to cling onto, however it comes – and my hopes for next year being better and reuniting with the people I’ve been missing so badly. It’s a tune for that. I hope it rings an internal jingle bell for whoever hears it. “ – Holly

“History Repeats “- New Music!!!

Holly Henderson has release her first new music of 2020! Recorded with her band in the UK during quarantine – each member recorded their parts and sent them in for collaboration.

On the single, Holly said –

“I wrote History Repeats the week George Floyd was murdered. There was this bubbling tension rising, in the media, online, and among friends. It just seemed like the whole world was holding its breath because we all realised simultaneously after the Rodney King riots, we’re watching it happen all over again. Literally nothing had changed in nearly 30 years and people were just ready to blow.

I’d been thinking about my role in the time of a revolution – how I could be productive in my own way as a pale skinned artist. As a songwriter, I know my place is best served in commentary, storytelling and solidarity, hence History Repeats. Simplistically, it’s just about what I see, what I’m learning, what scares me, and why I still have hope. I can’t speak for anyone else, really, and I’m not trying to. But I’d like to think ‘we’re not coming very far in my lifetime after all’ is something a lot of us have thought about in the last few months and years.

Contributing to the conversation is something the whole band felt deeply about, even if we couldn’t physically protest, travel, even get in a studio together. The recording of the song very much mirrored that. I wrote the song, sent a rough demo out to everyone with some basic arrangements, and everyone wrote/recorded their own parts until it became something so much richer with our ideas combined together, and Luke’s production gave it a home and a feeling that is entirely ours.

On top of that, it was important that we payed this message and our intentions forward, so we decided on giving any money made to the AAPF #SayHerName campaign. The campaign raises awareness of the stories of Black women and girls who have endured racist police violence, and supports their families.”

All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to the AAPF #SayHerName campaign.

Today, UK alternative singer and guitarist, Holly Henderson, shared her new single “Pride Can Wait”, the second taken from her upcoming album Monday Green. Sonically, the track transports the listener into a rich soundscape, resonating with space driven tones and Henderson’s silvery vocals. When writing “Pride Can Wait”, Henderson drew inspiration from David Bowie’s Blackstar, an album she found solace and hope in during a difficult time. Alongside the single, Henderson has revealed the album art and tracklisting for Monday Green, out June 7th on Trend & Chaos. On the track, Holly Henderson stated:

“I wrote this after a time where my Mum was gravely ill, and Bowie’s Blackstar had inspired me to see the idea of the end as a chance for transcendence rather than something to fear. A small space of time where suddenly everything is possible and nothing is conventional.

In that vein, for the bridge, Pete Thorn and I created a sparse soundscape as the song changes. The spacey sounds and the dissonant notes were inspired by the moment in David Bowie’s Blackstar where the tone of the song changes and transports you to a completely different place.”

UK alternative singer and guitarist, Holly Henderson, has unveiled her new single and video “Loneliness” via a premiere on FLAUNT Magazine. “Loneliness” is a quintessential Britpop song, mixing warm guitars with shimmering highlights while Henderson’s instantly alluring vocal melodies float over the driving beat. The video, directed by George Mays (Skrillex, Red Bull Media), demonstrates the boredom and anxious feelings that stem from being alone in the digital age. The single serves as the first release off Holly Henderson’s upcoming debut full-length album, Monday Green, which she worked on with notable guitarist Pete Thorn and will be out June 7th on Trend & Chaos. ‘Loneliness’ for me has the ethos of quintessential Brit Pop, it’s upbeat and melodic, but the message is morose, while having its tongue planted firmly in its cheek. Tying in with the video, it’s about being all dressed up with nowhere to go, of being a hopeless romantic in the modern age. We fabricate our best selves online, yet we stay in the confines of our bedrooms and become trapped in a superficial circle of proving ourselves to everyone, and getting nothing tactile and genuine back in return. It mocks the ridiculousness of us being more connected than ever, and at the same time, totally alone.
